We all know that hamster toys are a necessary part of any rodent’s life. Pet stores offer a ton of different options for our little pets. It’s easy to find running toys for hamsters. There are even toys available that are meant to encourage rodents to dig and climb.

What if buying hamster toys isn’t an option though? Maybe you don’t have enough money or just can’t be bothered to make your way to the pet store. Have no fear. There are quite a few really neat hamster toys that you can put together yourself. Here are few basic ideas.

One incredibly simple thing you can use to entertain your hamster is a cardboard roll. The type of roll you want to use basically depends on the size of your pet. If you have a small hamster, a toilet paper roll will probably suffice. If your pet is a bit of fatty, on the other hand, consider using one of those 12′ rolls from a paper towel tube. So what will your hamster do with these rolls? Well it’s really up to him! Chances are he’ll burrow into them though. Hamsters love to dig and hide.

Kleenex boxes are another great budget hamster toy. To prepare the toy for your pet’s use, all you have to do is rip off that plastic cover near the opening. Now simply place the box in your little pet’s cage and watch him go. If your hamster is anything like mine, chances are he really enjoys hiding in things. This box allows him the opportunity to do this. If your interested in expanding on this idea, try connecting two or more Kleenex boxes with toilet paper tubes. You can create an entire fortress for your hamster.

The next toy I want to discuss is a bit tougher to make. It’s a hamster maze. Although it’s not easy, putting a bit of time into making this particular toy is definitely worth it. Hamster’s absolutely love mazes! Start off with an empty flat of soda. Cut out an entrance on one side and an exit on the other. Now get yourself some scrap cardboard and start cutting it into strips. Glue the strips inside the flat of soda to create the maze. Try to make the inside walls a good height. We don’t want your hamster cheating.

The number of hamster toys that you can make at home is limitless. Use stuff that you see around the house and be creative. You’ll save a bit of money and provide your hamster with a ton of fun and exercise.
