Homemade Dog Food-Your Pooch Deserves It
June 3rd, 2009 by Monique Coincon
One of the best things to do to keep your dog healthy is to prepare his dog food yourself. Please do not think that doing this is either hard or time-consuming, because it is not. It just takes a good recipe and a little bit of time.
Are you asking yourself why you should make additional work for yourself when it is so much easier to just buy it? Well, that’s a good question. First off, by making it yourself, you have absolute control over what you put into your dog’s body.
Secondly it is cheaper and if you buy in bulk you stand to save more money by preparing the food yourself.
Also, have you ever thought that your picky dog might even like the taste of your homemade dog food better than he does the expensive, store bought canned or bagged stuff? By using your own recipe, you can tweak it until your dog is just begging for more!
Some things to keep in mind when making your dog food are avoid salt and to use lean cuts of meat. In order to make the food healthier, you want to mind the fat and sodium content, just as you would when cooking healthily for people. Avoiding salt is a good idea to keep the sodium down, but also because salt has a tendency to dehydrate. Increasing your dog’s thirst is not the best idea!
To make healthier homemade dog food use lean cuts of meat such as ground turkey which is both cheaper and nutritious.
Prepare your dog food according to the size of your dog, his eating habits and your cooking schedule. Put left overs in the fridge for not more than 5 days.
One more point to remember, introduce any new diet little by little to avoid any digestion problems.
