Dwarf Hamster Care: The Basics
July 17th, 2009 by jack Adams
There are various species of the Dwarf hamster. But they are all lovable just the same and are the perfect home pets. Dwarf hamsters are small hamsters, unlike the large Syrian hamster specie. But being small in size does not mean they are easier to care to for.
These miniature hamsters are very jumpy and are known to make a quick-getaway. They can hide in the most unnoticed places as they can fit into almost anything. Keeping them secure is of utmost importance.
The natural habitat of the hamster is a self-made underground shaft but tamed hamsters are usually housed in the plastic version of these shafts–the tubular habitats–that are sold in pet stores. Take note though that you should get the ones made for little mice and not the ones made for hamsters as the latter are too large for Dwarf hamsters. Wire cages and aquariums with a ten to twenty gallon capacity are also good options.
They are also extremely energetic and mobile. It is essential to have a running wheel inside his container. Get the ones tailored to the dwarf hamsters’ size. You will find that they absolutely enjoy getting on these wheels and can run for up to five miles.
Line your pet’s cage with a soot-free and porous substrate and your pet will thank you for it. These creatures instinctively like to dig out tunnels for themselves, so this will really make them feel more at home. Fresh substrate every week is a must for these creatures.
Shredded paper, tissue and cotton make for good nesting materials too. Because of their need to be alone once in a while, hamsters have to create these little nests for themselves.
Do not think that the small size of the Dwarf hamster means that they have small ap petites. In fact, they eat the same amount as the Syrian hamster because of the former’s fast metabolism. Hamsters like to feast on a variety of pellets, seeds, dried fruits and veggies. Keep providing them a new supply of food and water even if you see that he still has food in his nest.
A soft chew toys is one of the best gifts you can give your pet hamster, as he is constantly teething, even throughout his adulthood. If you leave him to chew whatever he comes across, he might cause damage to himself and to your things as well, should he happen to be out of the cage. So give your hamster a wooden chew toy right away.
Dwarf hamsters are such great pets and require little maintenance, which is well worth your time. All you have to do is make sure that their homes and accessories are disinfected once a week with soap and water. Avoid chemical solutions as those will cause more harm to your pets than good. Remember that substrate must only be placed on dry cages, so wipe your cages thoroughly after you rinse them. Now wasn’t that easy?
