Building a Chicken Coop – Keeping Costs Down
August 24th, 2009 by Nico Walker
In this article I’d like to talk specifically about the building materials for your chicken coop. This is going to make a big impact on how much money you spend on the chicken coop in total so understanding the different types of materials will be vital to making an informed decision.
Many individuals do have a tendency to think you need a lot of expensive materials to successfully build a chicken coop, however this is not the case at all. Chicken coops can be made from a variety of different materials including such things as an old shed, scrap lumber, PVC pipes, 50 gallon barrels, or other recycled materials you may have around the house already.
Of course as you may well know, timber is the most popular and most commonly used material. Ironically, timber is also the most expensive choice of material but of course, if you want your chicken coop to last many years without being damaged by the elements, then perhaps it would be worth your while to invest in a quality wooden chicken coop.
Of course if you decide to go with a wooden chicken coop then it’s important to bear in mind that different varieties of wood vary in price, hence the importance of considering the different varieties of timber available.
If you are thinking about just building a smaller coop, you might even be able to get away with using recycled timber instead. Asking around for scrap pieces of wood can also be one way to locate some materials to use, but bear in mind if you’re going to go this route there is a higher chance you’ll have to pull some nails and may wind up with a chicken coop that isn’t exactly matching. If you’re really looking for the absolute most cost effective method though, then it’s likely something that you will want to think about and consider.
Believe it or not; if you’re willing to shop around when it comes to purchasing the building materials, you can end up saving yourself about half of what you would have paid had you purchased the materials from the very first store you went into.
The bottom line is; it’s imperative that you give careful consideration to what’s been mentioned in this article before you go out and begin purchasing the materials you need. Furthermore, it’s essential for you to have a thorough understanding before you commence with the building. It’s relatively easy to start getting confused once you start building and you may very well experience some difficulty. For this reason, you should always try to make sense of it all before you start.
