Whether you are a ‘cat person’ or a ‘dog person’, chances are you are really an animal lover. There is something in our human nature that seeks out the close friendship and companionship of a little fuzzy creature to grant us unconditional love and affection. This quest for friendship may eventually lead you to someone like Carrie Herst.

Whatever type of animal you prefer, you would be hard-pressed to deny the powers that dogs can hold over us. In particular, small dogs like Pomeranians can be the ultimate dog companion. These dogs are very loyal to their owner and truly personify the phrase “man’s best friend”.

Their name comes from a region in northwest Germany, called Pomerania. The Pomeranian breed originally descended from the German spitz dog variety. They were initially bred as a much larger species, but the breed evolved into a much smaller version during the reign of England’s Queen Victoria. She was widely known as Pomeranian enthusiast.

Today’s Pomeranian breeds are very small dogs, sometimes called Poms or Pom Poms. The dogs typically weigh between 4 and 8 pounds and are usually shorter than one foot in height. This small size classifies them as the ‘toy’ or ‘tea-cup’ variety of dog.

Modern Pomeranian dogs can be found in many different color types and patterns even though they originally just black and white. Their coats are double-layered with a long coarse hair and a softer coat underneath. Because of these two coats, they tend to shed, which can cause their hair to become matted and tangles.

These dogs are generally friendly and usually create strong and loyal bonds with their owners. They can also become very territorial and defensive, which they display by their high-pitched bark.

The Pomeranian breed is very smart and they typically respond well to obedience training. With relatively few major health related problems and routine veterinary checkups, these dogs can live long lives up to 17 years. There are many types of small breed dogs to choose from, but this dog may be arguably one of the best possible choices.
