Thoughts To Consider Before Selecting An Exotic Pet
July 27th, 2010 by Lee Peterson
An exotic pet may seem to fit your jet-setting lifestyle, you may like to do things differently, or feel that it will go better with your designer clothes and gourmet food. Consider the following before you choose an exotic pet.
An exotic pet is a wild animal, generally not domesticated or found living in people’s homes. The broad definition includes birds, rodents and reptiles as well as other species. Unlike domesticated animals, your home is not their natural environment.
To some, this type of animal may sound like the perfect accessory to your stylish home, but they are also living beings that can be difficult to manage and maintain. In some instances, they can even attack their owners or others with whom they come into contact.
Feeding and Caring for your Exotic Pet
A typical diet for a common house pet is easily satisfied by a trip to the supermarket. This is not the case for exotic animals that are bred in the wild and feed off whatever they can find or capture that day. Many wild animals eat a great deal more food than a typical house pet. They eat to survive in the wilderness so the amount of food that you consider to be reasonable, may not nourish your new pet.
Exotic pets have exotic illnesses too, ones your local vet may not know how to treat. Are you ready for the additional time, travel and expense you will incur to find a specialist vet who can treat your exotic pet’s illness?
There Are Laws Governing Exotic Pets Too
There are laws governing ownership of exotic pets, and they differ depending on your location. You may need a permit or special license, so do some research before you go out and buy your pet.
Local regulations will probably require that you make sure the exotic animal is secured on your property. This is to prevent possible injury to neighbors and their pets, as an animal in unfamiliar surroundings may react aggressively due to stress and fear. This is your responsibility, and you will have to buy or build an appropriate enclosure. Before you get an exotic pet, consider whether it is the right step for you – and for the animal. Exotic pets are a lucrative business as long as there is a demand for them, but just because they are available does not make it the right thing to do – for you or for the animal.
