Why Do Dogs Attack

In spite of the close association between man and dogs, these animals’ aggression have resulted to dog attacks that caused minor to fatal injuries. In US over 1000 people require emergency treatments for injuries associated with dog bites every day. Dogs are inherently feral and the aggressive behavior is further honed for dogs utilized for protection work. The significant difference dogs made to humans way of life is probably the reason why dogs are branded as man’s best friends. For ages, dogs are seen beside man – being a loyal and affectionate pet as well a dependable helper and protector. Dogs have the wolves for ancestors and in spite of being tamed, the aggressive nature and the high prey drive will kick in from time to time. A situation in the environment will trigger the latent ferocious nature of a gentle dog and the dog will attack.

Dogs have the strength to knock people down. The jaws and the needle sharp teeth that can deliver hundreds of pounds of pressure can cause fatal injuries. Dogs are wonderful creatures and most people would choose a dog for a pet. However, because of the increasing number of dog attack incidents some people can’t help but be wary whenever a dog is seen.

What can be the reason why dogs attack humans? Bite and attack situations are often attributed to human behaviors. People have grown to love dogs, unfortunately, many pet owners are mauled by their own pets. Dogs are pack animals and as such an owner should be aware of the dog’s tendency to dominate. Dogs are well loved pets that are considered as members of the family thus it is not surprising for an owner to give in to the wiles of the pet. Pet owners are advised against allowing a pet to be pushy as this behavior can turn into aggressiveness that will make the dog attack at the slightest provocation.

Dogs are highly territorial. A dog will attack if potential danger to what is considered as its territory is perceived. An eating dog must never be approached as an attack is possible because the dog will try to protect its food. The human family is considered by the dog as a member of the pack. The children being members of the pack will be protected by the dog thus the screaming and laughter of playing children can make the dog attack.

Not all people love dogs. Dogs that are at the receiving end of humans cruel hands will attack either in fear or in self defense. Dogs that had a traumatic experiences have the tendency to be snappish as even a hand extended in friendship will be viewed by the dog as a hand that will inflect pain.
