As you probably know, cats have an absolutely amazing tongue that they use to keep their coat clean and beautiful. Sometimes, especially in what is called “the shedding season”, or for cats with very long or thick fur, your cats own efforts may need some help. Getting an occasional bath can remove a lot of loose hair, which spells less hairballs, and less cat hair on your “fur”niture. It also keeps mats and tangles at bay while keeping kitty looking magnificent.

You’re going to pay a good amount of money in order to send your cat to the groomers, and your cat will probably not be very pleased about the whole process. There is a variety of services a groomer can do for your cat. Some groomers offer fur trims while other will shave the cats completely with the exception of the head and tail. Most groomers will give cats baths and condition their fur.

Plenty of cat owners send their cats to the groomer in order to get their claws trimmed, and in some cases there are cat owners who send their cats to the groomers with the express intent of getting the cats gussied up with nail polish on the claws and bows in the fur.

You may now be thinking that anyone trying to put nail polish on your cat would probably need to see a plastic surgeon, and yes, it is true, most cats do not at all enjoy these procedures and may display both fear and anger.

While this could spell disaster if you tried it at home, professional groomers know what to do to make it easy in kitty, and how to restrain your cat gently in order to get the job done. Grooming, and especially dealing with, a cat is totally different than grooming a dog. A groomer experienced with cats is a must.

Once you have created a loving relationship with your best friend, teaching him to “Come” when you call can be a fairly simple behavioral implementation. Knowing that he will obey this command will build confidence in the knowledge that you have control over his behaviorthis is imperative in your relationship.

Your dog desperately needs your guidance in learning the “Come” command. However, if he has had a history of bad training, this can lead to him having negative reactions. This is where your relationship with him enters inonce he trusts you and you have bonded, the problem can be easily overcome.

Using a long line attached to your dog’s collar is the quickest way to teach him to obey the “Come” command. You will be in complete control of his behavior and it won’t matter whether he is four feet away or 14 feethe must “Come” when you call. As the line is dragged along the surface, say his name and follow it up with “Come.” If he doesn’t obey (as he probably won’t the first few times), just give a quick tug on the line. Be gentle, he’s trying to learn. Continue with this procedure until he responds immediately. At this time, you can substitute a leash for the line. Most dogs will accept this new command within a week.

Just like children, your sweet cuddly little guy needs to learn to understand the word “No.” This training must be consistently used with gentle correction for maximum impact. An example of utilizing this training would be to attach the long line to his collar, place a treat or food in the training area and, just prior to him reaching and gobbling up the treat, use the word “No” and gently tug the line. You will undoubtedly need to use this method until he has understood the association between the word “No” and any unwanted behavior.

Correcting your best buddy will soon become a non-issue because he fully understands that when you use the word “No,” you mean what you say. Obeying you is something he wants to do anyway and he will understand that this instruction will be pleasing to you.

Every dog is different. If your dog behaves in an incorrect manner after training, he could be confused or he could be testing you. Patience and a gentle hand is all he needs. Consistency is the name of the game. Remember to keep each session short (2 to 4 minutes) and be sure to praise him highly when he masters the new commands. And have some fun with him afterwards. Take him for a short jog or play ball in the backyard. Spending this time with him will ensure a lifetime of joy with your best pal.
