The Right Way of Taking Care Of Your Cat

March 21st, 2009 by Calvin Wapasa

If you are planning to be a pet owner, you need to be ready for the long term cat care. If you are settled on having cat as pet then you must get off to a good start and everything must be planned in order to avoid future mistakes. While cats make lovely companion, you must be aware of their various needs, and when it is concerns their feeding needs, they may not be very happy with the leftovers.

The best thing to do is to get the best cat food that is available, so that your feline friend feels charged and remains healthy. You might have to put away some money for the cat food and this could call for some sacrifices on your part to be able to afford such items. You also have to make sure that the surrounding your cat is living in is free from anything that can cause them accidents so do not let anything that is lethal and poisonous hanging about.

When it concerns tidiness, you have chosen the best pet, as cats are very particular about their grooming standards and keep themselves clean all the time. Although too much grooming can also be bad because they can hurt themselves in the process. If you notice the over grooming habit of the cat, remember that this could be early symptoms of flea invasion, so take your cat to the vet for adequate treatment. Remember you have a haughty and arrogant pet in the house so you too need to keep healthy and clean habits and keep all trashcans empty and clean.

Incredible as it may sound, a cat has 14 times more powerful sense of smell than a human, so when you think there is nothing smelly in the surrounding, your cat can smell something. They would refuse to use the litter box, for the purpose it is meant for, if it is smelly. Cats can easily use the belly of your clean car pet for depositing their poops or a basket of clean clothes perhaps would be just right for them. When it is a matter concerning these aspects of cat care, let not the cat wander away, just do what they want, and give them a clean and odor less litter bin.

Make friends with your local vet as soon as you decide to keep a pet, as you would need them more often than you think. Long-term cat care is all about remaining vigilant of early signs and symptoms, which show up, and if you just observe them critically, you would know if there is something that needs attention.

If you are settled at the thought that you want the cat to be with you for long, then you may really be the rightful owner of one. You cannot be act like you want it now and completely scrap the idea the next minute – it won’t be good for your feline friend and it won’t be good for you either.

So before you welcome a cat into the household, think things through over and over again. It is unwise to be hasty in your decision to keep a cat, and when you do so, be a responsible pet owner. Long-term care is a decision, which you would never regret as you get the opportunity to give those affectionate animals a good home and in turn have a good time too.

The Best Way To Quickly Potty Train A Puppy

March 20th, 2009 by Jeff Henderson

I was so nervous when we first got our dog. I had never had to potty train a puppy before. We had also enrolled in a puppy training class, so I asked the instructor if he had any potty training tips. What worked best was allot of work, but with great results.

First you need a crate. Your dog crate should be just big enough for your dog to turn around in. You don’t want allot of play room in the crate to avoid any indoor urination or poops. Believe it or not a crate sounds like a rough treatment, but is really good for a new puppy or to have a new dog adjust t your home. Always remove your dogs collar before putting them in the crate as well.

You will want to take the dog out every two hours in the beginning, and to the same spot outside. They may not always have to go but you are showing them that when they have to go the spot is outside. When they do their business, reward them with pleasantries and if you want a treat. This technique works really well but, especially with a puppy there may still be a few indoor accidents. Simply say “no” and bring your dog outside to the potty spot.

Don’t get angry with your dog though. This is a learning experience and you will be surprised how quickly they pick it up. Slowly as the dog shows that they understand that outside means potty and inside means no potty you can increase the time in between outings. Your dog will let you know when they have to go. Now that they have the ritual down you should make sure that your dog understands the “sit” and “wait” command. This way they can sit while you put on their leash and wait until you are ready for them to exit the door. This will avoid any bolting out the door as soon as it opens temptations your dog might have.

If you have an enclosed yard you will still want to use these methods in the beginning just so the dog understands. As the dog matures and follows your commands it will be ok to let them out in the yard with out the leash to do their business. Even if you are just letting the dog out to run and play, like a child you should always keep an eye on them. They are very smart and if they want to get out of a fence they sometimes can.

Understanding Jack Russell Terriers as Hunters

March 19th, 2009 by Cody Richardson

Who wouldn’t know Jack Russell Terriers? This breed appears regularly as lovable and playful companions on tv and movies that even unfamiliar people can point one. However, even escalation to celebrity status can’t erase the fact that these feisty dogs are once and always will be true blooded hunters.

This feisty dog was descended from small and lovable terriers of Europe and was primarily bred for hunting. Today, although famously known as household companion and pet, a Jack Russell Terrier is still recognized for its natural hunting abilities. If you wish to raise one, read the following information to better help you in taking care of your JRT.

Jack Russell Terriers are born feisty, happy, energetic, and bold. To be their owner requires a disposition that accepts them for what they are- hunters. In raising JRTs, you must provide them with a huge amount of attention, activities they can be busy with, training and discipline, and acceptance and understanding of their hunting nature.

JRTs have the tendency to be aggressive with other dogs and smaller animals such as cats and guinea pigs. This situation sometimes results to the death of other animals or the terrier itself. However, their aggressiveness can be controlled through training and discipline.

On your part, you must be responsible, consistent, and authoritative in imposing the rules. You must provide them with rules to follow and limitations to what they are allowed to do. If you fail to do these, it may result to unpleasant behaviors such as senseless aggressiveness, snapping, and obsessive barking.

JRTs love to bark, dig, chase, and explore making them naturally energetic. That’s why a sedate lifestyle doesn’t fit them or else it will only make them more aggressive. What they need, however, are activities to keep them busy, outdoors so they can explore, and training so they can be social and not fight or kill other animals.

Taking care and training of Jack Russell Terriers require patience and authority from you. If you think you would love to adopt one, better equip and prepare yourself for the responsibility. Always keep in mind that they are natural hunters so that when they try to be themselves, you wont be as surprised.

Many first time owners don’t do their research on JRTs before adopting one that’s why they fail to understand these loving creatures. Jack Russell Terriers make intelligent pets, great companions, and loyal friends. Know the right way to handle them and you will surely have fulfilled days and happy times with them.

Dog Training and Why It Is Critical

March 18th, 2009 by Gus Sanabria

Training your pet can be trying and a learning experience for you as well. The initial part of puppy training is the hardest, after that passes it gets easier. Once you have trained your dog to obey your commands you will be less likely to have to worry about him taking off on you and meeting with an accident. After getting past the initial hurdle of dog obedience training, you will be able to relax and really enjoy the time you have with your dog. It can be a bit stressful to complete the initial phase of dog training no matter how long it takes. This is the main reason that it is critical to ensure that you have all of the necessary assistance.

Housebreaking and obedience training are necessary for dogs, even though they might be frustrating or tiresome. The results of failing to train a house-pet are well known: property damage, biting and generally aggressive behavior, and of course the unwelcome “gifts” that are the result of failed house-breaking.

To avoid these and other consequences, and to make sure you are giving your dog the best ability to have a happy, well-behaved life then it is important to maintain a strict parental relationship with your pet. Dog training is the process of teaching a dog right from wrong. Unfortunately there are people who think that dogs instinctively know right from wrong, but this is false. Since dogs follow their instincts, it is up to the owners to enact their dog training. The dog does not instinctively know the human rules about being allowed on furniture in a home.

We, as the owners and the teachers of the pets, have to slowly and patiently walk our pets through dog training in order to teach them the way we live. Your dog wants to please you but until you teach it how to, it will be at a loss. Dog training will teach the dog the behavior you want it to have. It will also show the dog how to receive your affection and little extra treats every once in a while.

Resources Used For Dog Training:

* Class

* Books

* DVDs

* Magazine

Although there are a lot of wonderful dog training classes out there that will teach you about housebreaking and dog biting, it is important to know that these classes are mostly for information. Miracles will not be performed during these classes. The real work will take place once you are at home with your dog. Everything that you pick up from the dog training classes has to be enforced at home as this is where the magic will happen.

You can always look into books, magazines, DVDs or videos to help you with your dog training plan. Absorb and utilize the advice you are given. It could take from a few weeks to several months depending on what breed you are dog training. The dog training can pay off quickly with some consistent diligence from the owner.

Animal Hospitals to Spay and Neuter Geneva’s Precarious Dogs

March 17th, 2009 by Dr. N. J. Omaboe

And that’s just the start of it. As of September 15, 2008, Geneva’s list of dogs declared as dangerous or vicious has grown to 15. The latest additions are the Bullmastiff, Thai Ridgeback, and French Mastiff, a.k.a. Bordeaux Bulldog.

These additions are only the latest in Geneva’s history of dog banning. The latest wave began in June of 2005, when a child was killed by a Pitbull Terrier, followed soon after by the mauling of another child by the same breed.

These additions are only the latest in Geneva’s history of dog banning. The latest wave began in June of 2005, when a child was killed by a Pitbull Terrier, followed soon after by the mauling of another child by the same breed.

Owners who owned one of the flagged breeds before legislation was passed may maintain the dog, but only after reporting ownership to the cantonal veterinary office, proving that the dog originated from an approved breeder, completing a dog training course, and licensing the dog. Only one dangerous breed is permitted per household.

Per Geneva’s new dog ownership regulations, any of the 15 breeds considered to be dodgy must be muzzled and leashed when outside of their own domiciles. They must be spayed or neutered. Additionally, dogs that are mixed breeds, containing blood of any of the potentially ferocious breeds, are subject to the same policy as purebreds.

Geneva divides the 15 breeds into different categories, with each category holding specific requirements. A complete list of dangerous breeds and regulations can be obtained through Geneva’s cantonal veterinary office.

In addition to provisions that must be made for dangerous breeds, Geneva’s general dog owner population, caretakers of the canton’s 30,000 dogs, is subject to new rules. As previously declared, specific guidelines for the proper keeping of dogs must be followed. But more recently, every dog owner is now required to attend a dog ownership course, regardless of their dog’s breed.

Furthermore, dog walkers must now be licensed.

Geneva isn’t the only Swiss canton that’s tightening the leash when it comes to dog control. Valais, Fribourg, Bern, and Zurich have their own legislation. And, prospects point toward future rulings regarding care and control of dogs in all of Switzerland, including tougher liability for owners and nationwide breed bans.

Whether you’re a lifelong Geneva resident, tourist, or emigrant, familiarizing yourself with the rules governing dog ownership within the canton will prevent tricky situations. Following those set of laws will protect you, your dog, and your record with the law.

Don’t fail to comply with Geneva’s newest, and oldest, dog possession regulations by obtaining half truths, or no information. These laws are set to care for both you and your animal.
