Proper Dog Training Can Start Even Before Birth

January 16th, 2010 by Adriana Noton

Here’s a surprising new fact: Dog experts have discovered that puppies respond to attention even before they’re born! This new knowledge means that dog training can begin while puppies are still in the womb.

Dogs have a natural instinct toward sociability. They’re pack animals who look to a leader, an “alpha” dog, ” to know how to behave. Good obedience training establishes the pet owner as the “alpha” dog without harshness or cruelty, so that their pet responds appropriately to other people, other pets and to the world around them.

Good training also sets up a clear line of communication between a dog and an owner. Think of it this way: Suppose you found yourself in a foreign country where you didn’t speak the language. When you try to get something to eat, to get a job or even go to the bathroom, you don’t know how to ask for what you want. All people do is yell at you in words you don’t understand.

Eventually, however, as you learned the local language you will be able to have a happier, more fulfilling life there. The same is true of dogs that live as pets in a human environment. Through obedience training a dog learns how to associate behaviors with certain human sounds. Saying “sit” to a trained dog always results in the dog sitting. Saying “stay” keeps the dog in one place, and saying “come” brings the dog to its owner. With proper puppy training, both the owner and the dog develop a mutual understanding that each can trust in their relationship.

However, all puppies go through a period of “stranger avoidance” between six and 12 weeks. This is a natural fear that develops as a way to keep puppies safe from predators. During this time puppies exhibit more “startle” reactions to sounds and sudden movements. These reactions keep a pup safe, but they also could interfere with establishing relationships with people. That’s why it best not to rush a puppy through these behavioral period. Let it get its bearings first.

Dog training teaches pet owners as much as it teaches pets. By attending classes at local pet stores, kennels or with independent dog trainers, owners learn more than just how to control their dogs. They learn how to foster their dog’s health and well-being, from what kind of dog food to provide to what human foods can be dangerous, possibly even fatal, to their pets.

If a puppy is properly settled into a home, basic dog training, also known as obedience training, can begin in earnest around 12 weeks, or after a puppy has had all its vaccinations. By this time, a puppy that has been correctly socialized is ready to begin learning how to behave appropriately by following its owner’s instructions.

One thing that is never, never, never appropriate in dog training is to strike, hit or physically abuse a dog in any way. Dogs, especially puppies, quickly become devoted to their owners and physical abuse will destroy that relationship. Always train a dog with firmness, but with patience and lots of love.

Dogs can become more loyal, obedient, and affectionate towards their owners through vigorous puppy training. Enroll your canine companion in some dog training Kelowna today!

Using Cat Scratching Post & Cat Furniture to Discipline your Cat

January 15th, 2010 by Jeffry Johnston

There are people who are just confused about what a scratching post & cat furniture can do for your pet, in terms of health and discipline. With their constant scratching and leaping from furniture to furniture, cats can be mischievous at times. However, there is actually a way to enjoy having a pet cat while still preserving the safety and good condition of your home.

Is the solution declawing?

Some pet owners believe that declawing a cat is the best option. After all, this disables the cat from becoming a menace. There are no claws to injure people and destroy furniture and other home equipment. The problem with this particular option, however, is that it goes against the natural scheme of things. Cats should be allowed to let go of some tension through clawing. Hence, trimming should be the best resort.

The show cat

Declawing your cat will mean that you cannot let your pet join any competition. Show cats are checked for overall health and beauty. Judges will be looking at well-trimmed and not declawed paws. If your cat, however, is not gearing toward celebrity status, you may choose to have it declawed. Of course, you know that discipline is better over such a deceptively convenient solution.

Buying a cat scratching post & cat furniture

The scratching post & cat furniture combo is recommended for pet owners who want to do what is right while maintaining the condition of their own furniture. The best thing really is to provide a scratching post where the cat can be a cat and scratch to its heart’s content. The cat furniture is good for disciplining the cat to get used to behaving better in the face of its own pieces of furniture.

Claws out

The cat scratching post & cat furniture will also maintain your cat’s claws, qualifying it to enter pet competitions, which prohibit declawing on pets. Judges take a look at cats at their most natural form, though the claws should be trimmed for safety.

The discipline part of it

Well-disciplined and well-balanced cats should be happy and healthy pets. Scratching provides your cat with some balance through a sort of release. Discipline, of course, should inhibit your pet enough to stay within its territory.

With a chance to be balanced, both being able to exercise and being able to tell right from wrong, your cat will be healthier and happier. You will benefit from this by being able to take care of a better mannered cat. A scratching post & cat furniture may seem like luxury to people who do not know cats well. However, the set actually disciplines the cat while maintaining its happiness. The set makes for a happier home for both the cat and the pet owner.

Use Rubber Mats To Prevent Slip And Fall Accidents.

January 12th, 2010 by Adriana Noton

Business owners will appreciate the convenience and safety that is offered by installing rubber mats at the entry and in other sections of their place of business to prevent trip and fall accidents.

Any time you have customers entering your place of business there is the possibility of an accident occurring. I a world where everyone wants to make a fortune through lawsuits it is in your best interest to do your best to prevent that accident from happening. That makes it imperative that you have a rubber mat at the doorway to help prevent these accidents where moisture from rain or snow can collect. Since rubber provides a more slip proof surface, even when wet, you are less likely to have

Other examples of places where customers could have an accident include the produce section of a grocery store. Think of the danger of one grape dropped by accident. If another customer steps on the grape on a waxed floor, it becomes an immediate fall hazard. Even though you or your employees did not drop the grape, as the proprietor of the business, you can be held liable for the damages from the incident and bills can pile up readily.

Providing mats and runners at the entry of businesses as well as other areas where slips could occur is an excellent way to lower the chance of injury at your place of business.

Other areas where these tools can be used include businesses where fast food is prepared. Since there is often a buildup of oils and fats on the floors in the kitchen, they can become hazardous for your employees. Use of easily changeable runners can prevent worker’s compensation claims by preventing employee injuries.

You will appreciate that the runners or mats can be quickly rolled up when dirty and a clean one can be put out in its place. Meanwhile, be sure that workers work to keep floors and other surfaces clear of all spills. Make it a company policy that all floors and mats are mopped using an ammonia based detergent and hot water to remove grease and prevent a hazard.

Rubber mats can also help to protect floors from ordinary dirt and grime that can be brought in from the outside. This leads to lower costs of keeping an office, store or shop clean. Entry mats can be rolled up and quickly replaced if they are found to be soiled. They can then be cleaned with a garden hose or pressure washer to remove dirt and grime that would have otherwise found its way onto the rest of the floors.

For businesses that have workers who must spend time in muddy areas, the mat designed to catch this mud is an easy way to keep it off of car pets or other floor coverings that are installed in the building.

Rubber mats are a simple way to protect your business. Whether they are used at entry ways or in specific sections of the business, they can help to prevent employees or customers from falling and can be used to keep expensive floors clean and free of water, dirt and other debris that may cause a hazard.

A reliable source of high-quality rubber mats is a great investment to make. Stall mats not only help your horses’ health, but they are also more convenient in terms of maintenance.
