Labrador training and care. What it costs

April 30th, 2009 by Colin Peters

Owning your own labrador involves various costs which may not be obvious up front. There are costs covering food, immunization and kennel fees which are part of the package. The labrador is one of the most popular breeds and is relatively expensive probably due to its size.

What helps set the labrador apart form other dogs, is its good natured temperament making it an ideal choice for the family. As well as that it is one of the best for training to help the disabled.

Labradors are colored in one of 3 ways : chocolate, black and gold. There are further pigmentations. For example the gold labrador can vary from cream to gold and the chocolate labrador from mid brown to dark brown.

The American Kennel Club is a well established dog site and provides full information on all breeds. Should you have a Labrador worthy of showing, you will find a calender of events of dogs shows.

Before you buy your puppy, bear in mind you will have to give up some of your time to look after it and exercise it. As a large dog it will need regular daily exercising in order not to be boisterous in the house.

Your puppy may cost you an initial $400 to $700. But on top of this there are various inoculations you will need for extra protection. For example there are the basic 2 shots and an annual one. If you are going on vacation you will need to pay kennel fees and a shot to protect again common illnesses. You will probably want worming and fleas protection as well. A visit to some local vets sites will tell you what you can expect to pay.

Be aware of covering your dog for longer term illnesses. Treatment for chronic (on going) conditions will cost plenty if you are not well covered. Just be sure to read in the fine print that you are not being restricted to say, only a 12 month period of cover.

The AKCs Breeder Classifieds Service provides contact information for breeders who currently have AKC-registrable puppies available for sale. This would make a good starting point if you are looking to buy your first puppy. At least the online info will keep you headed in the right direction.

Professional dog grooming service center can be a good option but can also be very expensive. Also since, it is not something that cannot be done at home given that it is possible if you have the time and the equipment. The first and the foremost thing is that you have to be very patient with your dog all through the dog grooming session and don’t forget to reward him once it is finished so that you don’t face any difficulties the next time.

The second important thing is purchasing the correct pet supplies to make possible grooming at home. The different kinds of pet supplies that you will require for grooming includes: – Bathing accessories: This will mostly include hair dryers, shampoo, conditioner and towels. Clippers: This will consist of pet grooming tools like turbo clippers, clipper kits, combs, trimmers etc. Others: This can include an array of pet grooming tools like nail grinders, Furminator de-shedding tools, Styptic powder, Matbreaker dematting tool, dematting combs, dematting rake, flea comb, area slicker brushes, undercoat rake, etc. Dental toothpaste: this is an often-overlooked necessity when buying pet supplies. Dental problems in cats and dogs are one of the most expensive veterinarian costs during a pet’s life.

Dog grooming is important for all pets but more for dogs with a lot of hair. Dogs like German Shepherds have double coat and experience a lot of hair fall and hence should be groomed regularly. Some of the important parts of the body that need to be cleaned and groomed include the skin and ears and it is a must to clip the nails for dogs.

Cleaning the ears of dogs is an integral part of dog grooming because of the fact that they get a lot of infections through their ears. Dogs with droopy ears are highly susceptible to different types of ear problems and infections caused by ear mites, waxy ears, and fungus. You need to check the ears of your dog once every week and clean them as well. Another important part of dog grooming is clipping nails by using a nail trimmer like Little Pals Nail Trimmer and this is mostly done for dogs, as their nails can grow unusually big. Although they will never hurt you with their nails but are quite capable of scratching you while playing. You need to clip nails once every 3 weeks.

The one thing that most pets hate and dogs even more is bathing. Except for the Retrievers almost all dogs hate taking a bath. But bathing is also an important part of dog grooming. Before you give your pet a nice bath, ensure that you have the necessary pet supplies like shampoo, conditioner etc.

Koi Pond Design

March 25th, 2009 by John Stoner

We have all heard it before – plan before you start any major project. Well a Koi pond design is no different. Building a Koi pond is a big project. Poor planning will certainly cause it to be more expensive than you planned and take a lot longer to get it completed.

Decide on the shape of your Koi pond. There will always be constraints on the design that you can’t control – existing landscape, slope of the ground, other structures, etc. Lay out several shapes for the pond using lengths of rope or garden hose. Make sure you check out the design from all angles. Don’t forget to look at the design from inside your home. If you have an upstairs, look down on the designs as well.

The depth of your pond is a critical consideration for several reasons. Koi get to be big fish. They can grow 3 to 6 inches a year. They need room to swim not only laterally but up and down as well. You need to have a minimum depth of 4 feet. Ideally, 6 to 8 feet will give your fish all the room they will need. This greater depth also helps to stabilize the water temperature being cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter months.

With a larger pond you can obviously have more fish. The minimum size your koi pond design should have is 6 ft. by 9 ft. by 4 ft. deep. This will hold about 1600 gallons of water and provide adequate but minimum space for your Koi. In planning the true depth of the pond allow for about 6 in. from the water line to the top edge of the pond.

Keeping your Koi pond design simple is important. A simple design, while it may not look that spectacular on paper, will allow for better water circulation and filtration. You can always spruce up the design with landscape plantings. To keep your fish healthy and thriving you want o make sure the pond is kept clean and has the proper chemical balance. A simple design will make this a lot easier.

The best simple design shape is a rectangular or oblong pond. The rectangular design more easily allows the placement of multiple drains thus providing better filtration. It will minimize or eliminate dead areas that have poor or no water circulation.

The location of your pond is a very important part of Koi pond design. It should be where you will enjoy it the most. Most people prefer to have it as the central or focal point of a backyard or garden. Being able to view it from a balcony, deck or back porch can be very spectacular.

As you determine that perfect place, consider these issues. A pond in full sun is perfect for algae growth. Incorporate elements into your design to provide some shade. A pond under a tree is going to get dirty with debris and eventually cause the acidity to rise if not watched carefully. A pond next to large trees could find the pond liner pierced or concrete cracked by the roots. Keep your pond away from any locations that can have excessive rain water runoff. Make sure your pond not located to close to plants that require the use of harmful insecticides.
