Chick House and its Dimensions
June 4th, 2009 by Paul J. Easton
When you are designing your chick house, you must bear in mind its dimensions. You should know how many chicks you are projecting to produce in the beginning and some room for possible increase in your chickens. This is essential in chick house dimensions as you do not desire your chicks to be overcrowded. When the chicks are jam-packed together in a small space, they can spread illnesses much quicker. Chicks, like any baby animal, require nourishing and are more open to illnesses than full grown chickens. With lots of space, you will certainly have more success with satisfying your chicks’ and chickens’ needs.
You will require adding in your chick coop dimensions a space for incubation. This is particularly true if you plan on increasing your chicks from eggs. This incubation space should be separate from the area where the baby and older chicks are kept. You also want to have a separate door for the incubator space. This will prevent the interruption of the other chicks if you are in the hatching stage. The space must be large enough to handle the equipment too.
You will need to consider the part for the run for the older chicks too. If the chicks are young, they will have a temporary feathers that be later replaced with full feathers. Expect this when the chicks reach the age of six to eight weeks old. When this occurs, you can have the older chicks range freely outdoors in the run to take some fresh air. You want to have a run that will be sufficiently spacious for the number of chicks you have. They can later be then moved to the main chicken house to make room for more hatchlings. Insure the chicks are protected if in the run area by planting your chicken wires into the ground. This will prevent predators from getting your chicks.
Once you have finalized the correct chick coop dimensions for your project, you can commence building the chick coop. With all these considerations for the dimensions of your chick coop, you can expect to have more success with your chickens.
