Grooming Your Cat

July 21st, 2010 by Dr Kelly Mayo

No cat wants to be dirty, and its up to you to ensure that your ragdoll kittens stay clean. Grooming is very important, as it helps your cat remain clean and healthy. Grooming starts with brushing, as brushing helps to keep the cats hair from becoming hairballs. Brushing will remove loose hair, and help prevent the risk of hairballs. A lot of cats have trouble dislodging hairballs. If the cat isnt able to get a hairball out, it could result in a blockage of the intestines. Blockages are very serious, and can quickly become life threatening for your pet.

Cats that have long hair need to be brushed and combed on a daily basis, while cats with short hair need to be groomed on a weekly basis. When you brush your cat, you should always watch for lumps in the coat and skin irritations. You should start brushing along the cats back, going from his head to his tail. Do this a few times on one side, and then switch to the other. Each area should be brushed a few times in the direction of the way your cats hair is growing.

When you brush your cat, you should always avoid brushing his face and paws. If a cat doesnt like to be brushed, you can still groom him using another tool. The grooming glove is an excellent alternative to the brush, as most cats dont mind it at all. Starting out young is the key to grooming, as it will get your cat used to brushing and grooming. Some cats that have started grooming when they were kittens grow to love it, many of which often look forward to their grooming time.

When brushing your cat, make sure that you check his ears, eyes, teeth, and claws. His eyes should be bright and clear with nothing residing in the corners. His ears should be clean, pink in color, and no sign of ear mites. Ear mites result from dirt built up in a cats ears, and can result in the ears shriveling up and your cat losing his hearing. Ear mites are very annoying for the cat, and hard for you as an owner to get rid of. The best way to get rid of them is to ensure that your cats ears stay clean and healthy.

Each time you groom your cat, you should always aim to go a bit further with your examinations. When your cat remains still, you should always praise him and give him a treat. If your cat doesnt cooperate and starts to struggle, you shouldnt fight with him, but instead let him go and try the next day. Once your cat gets used to grooming he will look forward to it each and every day.

My Pup Just Will Not Stop Ruining My Shoes

July 19th, 2010 by Brendan Beveridge

Puppies love chewing on everything they can get their paws on and though it might get you frustrated that you lost your favorite pair of shoes, screaming at the pup will do no good.

There is nothing you can to do stop an infant dog gnawing away at everything in sight as their teeth are extremely sensitive. So put your shoes away in storage until the biting stops.

you will be able to find formulated dog food at any good pet store, especially made for teething dogs. The type of food needs to not be too crunchy or it will be difficult for your pup to chew. Your dog might even suffer a loss of appetite for a few days and it’s normal. Just make sure you give it plenty of water to drink to maintain its level of hydration.

Puppies do need to gnaw at something to ease help ease their teething sensitivity, so make sure you give your pup ample items to chew on.

Whatever you give your dog to chew, make sure the objects do not have any loose bits that might come off and choke your puppy. Also avoid any old toys that might have poisonous chemicals present in the paint or material. Good toys for chewing can be rubber balls or rubber bones – these are perfectly safe.

Other dangerous items around the house that could harm a dog would be anything with an electrical current running through it (obviously). Puppies just love biting through cables and similar items so keep them out of reach of your dog.

In the case where you need the wires lying about the house or if they’re a permanent fixture, then you can apply some safe but distasteful ointment onto the cables to stop your dog from wanting to ever chew on it again.

Just know that this teething period will pass in good time so in the meantime, you job will be to keep a close eye on your dog to make sure it plays safely. Never leave your puppy to run around on its own unsupervised in the garden.

Shih Tzu Dogs

July 18th, 2010 by Lizzie Bell Martin

Shih Tzu dogs are perfect apartment-sized pets. Why? Because they only grow to 8 – 11 inches tall, and weigh about 9-16 pounds. So, if you are planning on getting yourself a new pet, maybe a Shih Tzu is the right dog for you however, there are a few things you will need to know about them.

Shih Tzu have beautiful long hair that even covers their tails, ears and face. Their tails flip over their back, creating a sort of fountain effect. Because the hair around their face is long, owners will generally tie it up into a pony-tail or flip to keep the hair free from the eyes. They have a short muzzle which tends to have shorter hair.

Although they are very lively pets, they can also be very caring and thoughtful. They are very friendly, make friends easily and can be very easy to train with a patient teacher. Shih Tzu are also very good with other pets, as long as they don’t feel threatened of losing your attention. Everyone in the family needs to be the pack leader for this dog, making rules of the house very clear. Otherwise, your Shih Tzu may become a bit snappy when they surprised or upset. This usually happens when people allow their dog to be the pack leader.

Daily grooming of Shih Tzu is extremely important because their coats can easily become tangled and knotted. The best way to brush your Shih Tzu is to start at the tip of the hair and work your way up, de-tangling as you go. Some owners choose to keep their dog’s hair trimmed shorter for easier maintenance. No matter the “style” you have your dog, it is important to keep their eyes and ears clean of any debris. Because this breed of dog sheds very little, it is an excellent choice for people who have allergies to pet dander.

Walking your Shih Tzu daily is very important. This can alleviate behavior problems that may arise out of mental or physical stress. Giving them time off the lead, in a safe area, can give this dog a lot of exercise that they may not get just from playing inside. Over feeding your Shih Tzu can be regulated by keeping a feeding schedule. If allowed to free feed, your Shih Tzu will gain weight.

Miami Veterinarians Help Your Pet

July 12th, 2010 by Valerie Harding

A pet owner has both fun and responsibilities. The animal, whether cat or dog, needs medical preventive care, as its owner does. You can select from cats, dogs, ferrets, guinea pigs and hamsters as well as the many pet birds available. Miami veterinarians can help you keep all these pets in good health and give the necessary vaccinations.

Vaccinations and regular check-ups are the norm now. Spaying and neutering is done routinely and sometimes declawing of cats as well. One modern innovation that is a safeguard against loss is a microchip that is implanted under the pet’s skin. On it are recorded the name, address and phone number to use to contact you if someone finds your pet. There is an identifying number as well since people move to different locations during the pet’s lifetime.

Your pet may have his own prescription medicine if he is sick. Surgical procedures are done as well as laser surgery. Pet boarding can be done in the same building as the veterinarian is located. All professional grooming is offered too.

A pet owner will want to keep the night emergency number for the vet along with the regular office number. An animal may have an accident that requires immediate attention during the night. Veterinary emergency care should be available.

Pre-registration for a new client can be done online. The forms to fill out are available for health care and pet boarding. You also have to sign a consent form before surgery requiring an anesthetic. For your own information, you will find a pre-surgical information sheet to download and save.

Having teeth cleaned as a part of routine care is a good precaution against periodontal disease. These bacterial diseases can affect the liver, heart or kidneys of your pet. Dogs are susceptible to periodontal disease and left untreated, it can even result in death. Buy a toothbrush and paste and brush his teeth at home too.

If a pet has an accident and the owner can’t afford the money to pay for life-saving surgery, there is help available. It is difficult to face thousands of dollars in a situation such as this. If you want to try to save a pet, he may or may not survive surgery. In this unhappy case, the bill would still require payment.

If you face making a life or death choice due to finances, find a source to help with either a grant or loan. Animal welfare organizations that do this are available. Miami veterinarians can direct you to one of these organizations. Owning a pet is a big responsibility. Therefore a program of health care is advisable. The love and fun you receive from a dog or cat is well worth the expenditure.
