Grooming Poodles the Best Way

December 6th, 2009 by Geraldine Dimarco

One of the most expensive things about owning poodles is keeping them well groomed. If you learn to do this yourself, you’ll develop a better relationship with your pet, and you’ll save a lot of money in the long run. Grooming poodles might seem hard, but it’s actually a task that just about anyone can learn to do. You just need patience and the willingness to practice your skills.

When you are looking into grooming standard poodles, you will find that the process will generally take around three hours once you have had some experience. When you are just getting started, you may find that you need to spread the grooming out over several days, to give you and your dog a bit of rest. After a few sessions, you’ll get the hang of it, but if the time commitment isn’t really for you, you’ll find that you can get a dog groomer to do it for you.

Remember that you have a choice of trims available to you when you are thinking of grooming poodles. You’ll find that the poodle’s curly, stiff hair will allow you to take advantage of many looks. Remember, also, though, that some looks are more care intensive and require more maintenance than others. Show poodles will certainly require more maintenance and a more conservative cut than pet poodles.

All show poodles must have a variation on the traditional lion cut. There are three variations on this kind of poodle grooming – continental, English saddle, and puppy. However, they’re all related to the traditional “poodle” cut that we know so well. Originally, this cut was created to help these dogs swim more effectively while retrieving birds from the water. A long mane of fur on the chest protected the lungs and heart, and the tufts on the legs offered joint protection.

If you are not going to show your dog, you’ll find that you have quite a few more options when it comes to making sure that your dog looks tidy. You can do an all-around short trim, which is ideal when you are considering how to make a good grooming job last, but if you are looking for something more flashy, consider looking at pictures online and in books to get some ideas.

When thinking bout grooming poodles, remember that most people will clip the fur at the base of the ail, on the feet and on the face very short, to make sure that it does not get very dirty and to make the dog easier to care for. Remember that the shorter you keep the fur clipped, the less dirt will get into your househhold, and the less the dog will need to be brushed over all. Remember to wash your poodle before you groom them, and make sure that if you clip yourself that you use high-quality tools that are kept sharp.

The dog is regarded as their best friend by many dog owners but they may not give much importance to the dog food. For dog information, many people turn to veterinarians. Some vets will recommend vitamin supplements or medications, but all that is required is to change your dog’s diet as when your dog starts eating healthier, you may see improvements in its overall health.

Fortunately, there are alternative options for those in search of dog information regarding a healthy diet. For one, you could opt to make your own dog food. If you want a healthier dog, and are trying to improve your dog’s energy level and appearance, you should try Flint River Ranch dog food.

Many turn to their veterinarian for dog information and advice. Some vets will recommend vitamin supplements or medications. But this might not be necessary. It’s possible that just a change to a healthier diet could make the difference in a dog’s appearance, energy level and overall health. Lots of dog food products are made with leftover scraps from machines at the food processing plants. That not only sounds unappealing, it also is not the best choice for your dog’s well-being.

There are alternatives for those dog owners that are seeking dog information regarding a healthy diet. One option is to make your own dog food. You can use the foods you prepare for yourself and your family. Simply cool the food to room temperature in the refrigerator before feeding it to your pet. However, there are several drawbacks to this arrangement.

The major one is that if you do not have a wealth of dog information and are not wholly conversant with pet nutrition, you will not be certain your pet is absorbing the necessary nutrients from your diet. In addition, it costs a lot of money to feed another “person” at the dinner table. A dog food containing human grade, natural ingredients would be a good alternative. Get Rid Of Cat Fleas In Your Home With 3 Simple Steps

June 25th, 2009 by Jana Walsh

I couldn’t believe that my home was taken over by blood sucking fleas. Luckily, I found a product that fixed all my flea problems.

So have you noticed your beloved pet scratching more than normal the last few days, and now you have an itch that seems to be spreading to all parts of your body? Has it come to your attention that you may have a flea infestation in your home?

Many pet owners deal with a flea infestation at least once, but did you know that pets are not the only ones bringing in fleas? Fleas are not shy. They will ride on anything or anyone. Even you can bring in fleas from outside. Well, what I came across will eliminate fleas easily and effectively from your home, but before we go into that let’s begin with a little information.

Is it really a flea infestation you are dealing with?

1. Pet Itching Too Much

Does one of your pets itch more than normal? A pet being itchy is usually the first sign, but not the only. Your pet may simply have a rash or dry skin from too much sun. Even really cold weather conditions will make them itchy.

2. Small Red Bumps

There are usually little red itchy bumps that appear around your ankles and if your children play on the floor they could have them all over. These bumps disappear in just a few days.

How do you get rid of fleas in your home?

Before you start make sure you have at least a few hours to complete all three steps. If you don’t rid your home, your yard, and your pets at the same time then your flea infestation will come back.

(1) Rid Your Pet of Fleas

* Comb Out Pets – Get a flea comb and comb out all the fleas from their fur.

* Flea Powder Pets – Get the flea powder and sprinkle it evenly into your pets fur. This process eliminates not only fleas but also flea eggs and larvae.

(2) Eliminating Fleas In The House

* Take a antibacterial cleaner and clean the surfaces of your home. Make sure you get the counters, cabinets, tables, and floors. Fleas enjoy humid areas so clean the basement and garage floors too.

* Vacuum every inch of the house. Get out the attachment and clean the corners of the rooms. Fleas love to hide here.

* After vacuuming sprinkle powder evenly over the carpet.

* Wash couch surfaces and bedding in all bedrooms and sprinkle flea powder over them.

(3) Rid Yard

* Take that same flea powder and evenly coat the lawn and concrete.

* Do this at the end of every spring to prevent any fleas from multiplying.

Before you spray anything anywhere in your house make sure to read all the warnings and directions. Most are not safe until dry so do not spray around pets, or children. Also, while spraying outside remember to avoid spraying any gardens especially ones containing foods.

Cat Training Tips

May 30th, 2009 by Janice Chee

In the wild, cats have a natural ability and instinct to care for themselves. House cats, on the other hand, depend on humans for care and feeding. They require a considerable amount of attention. Bookstores and local humane societies can provide cat owners with a plethora of educational materials on the responsibility of cat ownership and the care of cats.

You may not know it, but cats can be trained. Like other animal training programs gentle, positive training will work best. Offer your cat a treat when they behave correctly or as you have taught them. When they misbehave just ignore them.

It’s true that cats keep themselves clean. They like to clean themselves up a little daily. Nonetheless, your cat needs a good bath every three weeks. Products designed just for cats are available at your local pet store, but any mild soap is sufficient. Some, if not most, cats don’t care for baths. Unless you train your cat from the time it is a kitten to get used to bath water and reward it with a treat following every bath, you will have a scratchy situation on your hands when you try to bath the cat when it gets older. Start when your cat is a kitten and you should be able to acclimate the cat to bathing.

Do everything you can to make the bath fun and rewarding for your cat. Don’t hit or punish your cat at bath time. This will only cause your cat to be more apprehensive about bathing in the future.

Don’t forget to clean your cat’s ears and nails with a gentle q-tip. Towel dry your cat after its bath. Don’t even consider using a blow dryer. The noise and hot air will scare the cat, and the hot air can damage your cat’s sensitive skin. Brush your cat after the towel dry.

It’s a good idea to buy your cat its own bed. While it is common for cats to sleep with their owner, your cat will be just as satisfied sleeping beside your bed. This will keep your clothes and bed linens from always being full of cat hair. Some people are allergic to cat hair, and you don’t want to have to choose between your cat and your sleeping mate.

Keep the cat litter box in a place where the cat can easily reach it, but where the smell will not disturb you or your family. Keep the litter box clean for the health and safety of your family and your cat.

Best Way To Pick A Reptile

May 19th, 2009 by Tom Johnson

Have you finally decided to get a pet reptile? You have to have some idea where to start before you purchase a reptile. One of the first things to consider is what you are able to provide for your new pet. Remember, you will need to provide adequate housing that can safely accommodate your pet and food that you are comfortable feeding the pet.

Think about the time you have available. Many people buy a reptile and end up having to find a new home because they don’t have time to care for the reptile, or they decide to start a family and feel the reptile is not a suitable pet.

Keep these factors in mind and you will reduce the number of potential species on your reptile hotlist. It will also help keep you realistic before your purchase.

Once you have decided upon what you feel is the right animal for you, read everything you can find about the animal. Learn about housing, feeding, and where to find food locally.

Talk to the experts at your local reptile store. Ask questions until they feel sure you are prepared to own a reptile. Also, visit discussion forums to learn from people who own reptiles. Once you feel you have a reasonable grasp on the species, buy and set up housing before you buy and bring home the pet.

This includes the installation of heaters, lighting, an adequate substrate, and temperature and humidity monitoring. Once you feel satisfied that everything is in place it is time to go buy your pet. It is best to buy from a reputable pet store or specialist breeder.

Select a vibrant, healthy animal and give him or her adequate time to adjust to their new home before you start getting them out to play. Your last step is to find a local vet who specializes in reptiles. In the event of an emergency it is important to know there is a professional upon whom you can call for help.
